Samsung Electronics will demonstrate a prototype of its SE-S084D optical disk drive (ODD) during this week’s 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Featuring a more compact footprint and lighter weight than competitive offerings, the company says, the DVD writer delivers high performance with a USB power source to eliminate electrical outlet requirements.

The SE-S084D is compatible with all major operating systems, including Windows 7 and the Mac OS. Its Buffer Under Run technology prevents errors caused by writing speeds that exceed data transfer speeds, while enabling PC multitasking. The DVD writer also provides a variety of speeds across different data media types, including 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD±R recording, 5X DVD-RAM recording, 8X DVD+R Dual Layer recording, 6X DVD-R Dual Layer recording, 8X DVD+RW recording, and 6X DVD-RW recording.

Eco-friendly, the SE-S084D is manufactured with lead-free soldering technology, eliminating harmful materials such as Pb, cd, cr+6, Hg, PBBs, and PBDE. It features a rounded shape, and its compact size is 20% smaller than conventional DVD writers, Samsung says. It’s also 25% lighter than Samsung’s conventional DVD writer to accommodate mobile applications. According to the company, the SE-S084D will be available worldwide in the second quarter of 2010.
