During the 2010 International CES held this month in Las Vegas, DeviceVM announced the availability of Splashtop 2.0. This software platform provides instant access to a customizable launch dock that incorporates Web-based and local applications for netbooks. In fact, the touch-enabled Lenova Ideapad S10-3t netbook features QuickStart, which is the first publicly available implementation of Splashtop 2.0.

According to DeviceVM, Splashtop 2.0 was designed to allow consumers to rapidly access the Web and key software applications without booting their computer’s main operating system. It provides Internet access via DSL, Wi-Fi, or 3G if enabled for instant computing everywhere. Also, this edition is touch-enabled and optimized to be faster than previous versions, combining services into a single smart start screen that’s available within seconds of powering up.

The platform’s redesigned and highly configurable quick-launch dock combines local application with Web applications to provide access to the Internet with a click or a touch. With its drag-and-drop customization wizard, users can quickly and easily add their favorite applications such as Gmail and Calendar as well as their favorite sites such as Facebook and YouTube. They can even add games from developers like Zynga and 9wee as well as native apps like Skype, Chat, and Music Player.

Furthermore, Splashtop 2.0 makes it easy to add or remove applications from the dock. Also, changing the look and feel of the desktop wallpaper is simple, and Lenovo provides several variations pre-installed as part of the QuickStart package. Users can even create their own packages comprising different combinations of applications and themes, giving each package a name and adding favorite Web sites as well.

A default package is preloaded on the system based on the language chosen as part of the initial setup process. For example, the U.S. package includes popular social media sites such as Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and YouTube, as well as CNN, ESPN, and Pandora, while the China package offers QQ, Kaixin, Sina, Baidu, and Youku. Splashtop 2.0 currently offers nine packages and supports 23 languages.

Optimized for 3G connectivity, the platform is designed for seamless switching between 3G and Wi-Fi. It also supports the most popular 3G chipset solutions on the market, including chipsets from Ericsson, Hojy, Huawei, Option, Qualcomm, and ZTE. DeviceVM plans to continue working closely with wireless operators to deliver robust 3G management connection functionality.
