LG Selects SanDisk Module SSD For Mobile PC
LG Electronics has selected the 64-Gbyte SanDisk pSSD Gen2 as the solid-state drive (SSD) for its upcoming ultra-thin mobile PC. Unlike conventional hard-disk drives (HDDs), SSDs don’t have any moving parts, improving durability and preventing data loss from drive failure. Also, SSD-equipped computers run cooler and more quietly, consume less power, and deliver faster performance than those equipped with HDDs, according to SanDisk.
The pSSD drive has an industry-standard 1.8-in. form factor with a micro SATA interface. It weighs up to 8.7 g and measures 39.8 by 54 by 4 mm, consuming an average of 0.3 W, suiting the LG ultra-thin mobile PC’s requirements for a small form factor and extended battery life.
The LG device combines enhanced performance with fast and accessible 3G mobile broadband connectivity, the companies say. It weighs 970 g and measures 298 by 186 by 17.6 mm with an 11.6-in. LCD. Also, it provides 3.5 hours of battery life, a webcam, and multiple connectivity options such as USB, BT, and WLAN. Its Menlow platform minimizes power consumption. And, it runs Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system.
The pSSD drive has an industry-standard 1.8-in. form factor with a micro SATA interface, delivering features that are designed to complement the LG PC (see the figure). For example, SanDisk says that it employs the speed and reliability of the SATA interface to provide a high-performance, cost-effective storage solution for smaller devices. It weighs up to 8.7 g and measures 39.8 by 54 by 4 mm, consuming an average of 0.3 W, suiting the LG PC’s requirements for a small form factor and extended battery life.
Additionally, the pSSD offers 9000-vRPM performance. Its nonvolatile nCache write cache acceleration technology boosts random write performance, improves user responsiveness, and helps prevent stalling, SanDisk says. The drive comes in a variety of PATA and SATA interfaces and is available to OEMs in capacities ranging from 8 to 64 Gbytes.
