Service Offers Worldwide Weather Info On Mobile Phones

Travelers who need weather forecasts from around the world can receive them on their mobile telephones by subscribing to Handy Weather, a new application for Java-based phones. Offered by Paragon Software Group, the service is compatible with all mobile phones supporting Java MIDP 2.0, subject to network connection and carrier capabilities. Wireless Internet compatibility is the only requirement.

Handy Weather can update the forecasts for 40,000 cities at intervals of two, four, eight, 12, or 24 hours or at a time preset by the user. Information in the report includes current conditions such as barometric pressure and humidity; high and low temperatures in Celsius or Fahrenheit; wind direction and speed in mph, km/hr, or m/s; and the UV index. Also available is a temperature graph for up to seven consecutive days and simultaneous forecasts for several locations of the user’s choice. Animated graphics use traditional weather icons and text, and the forecast for each city uses only 2.5 kbits.

The service costs $5.95 (3.95 euro VAT included) for a three-month subscription and $14.95 (10.95 euro with VAT) for a one-year subscription. Handy Weather is available in different editions (separate files) for phones with 240- by 320-, 176- by 220-, and 128- by 160-resolution screens.
