NewStep and Kyocera Wireless collaborate on CDMA/Wi-Fi convergence

NewStep Networks Inc. and Kyocera Wireless Corp. have announced that the companies are working together in trials for CDMA-compliant voice call continuity (VCC) solutions for fixed-mobile convergence.

The companies have successfully tested a Wi-Fi-enabled prototype handset with the NewStep CSN fixed-mobile convergence platform. This demonstration of seamless CDMA-to-VoIP hand-off furthers the leadership exhibited by both companies in the FMC space for bringing complete and powerful solutions for wireless mobility in residential and enterprise spaces.

“NewStep is adding capabilities to our Converged Services Node platform, a solution currently deployed at Embarq, British Telecom and other carriers, and is continuing to deliver the value of service convergence and voice call continuity to the marketplace,” said Craig Gosselin, NewStep Networks’ chief marketing officer. “The knowledge that Kyocera’s next-generation handsets are fully tested with CSN further demonstrates the power of our solution, and validates VCC in the market.”

NewStep currently offers its patented, carrier-class CSN server-based software platform in two versions — the CSN30 for enterprises and small carriers, and the CSN1000 for large carriers. Both platforms converge services across diverse networks to enable subscribers to have a single number, single voicemail, simultaneous ringing across multiple phones, and other features like corporate extension dialing, from a single handset.

Kyocera Wireless said it committed to pushing new technologies, such as VCC-enabled CDMA/Wi-Fi handsets, into the market and broadening the range of mobile communications for the enterprise and consumer alike. Fixed-mobile convergence presents new opportunities for service and content providers as well as end users, enabling a variety of new features and capabilities for mobile handsets.

“Voice Call Continuity is one of the critical pieces that makes fixed-mobile convergence a marketable solution,” said Dave Carey, vice president of Strategic Planning at Kyocera Wireless. “This joint trial with NewStep provides Kyocera with yet another industry-leading infrastructure provider for us to continue developing FMC-ready CDMA handsets that are ready for the market now.”
