Nth Air launches first WiMAX service in Silicon Valley
Nth Air Inc. has launched the first mobile WiMAX (802.16e) network trial in Silicon Valley. This newly available technology delivers unprecedented high-speed broadband Internet connectivity and communication services in terms of throughput capacity and coverage area.
In contrast to Wi-Fi distribution nodes, which provide short-distance connectivity, WiMAX 802.16e delivers high capacity ubiquitous broadband coverage at cellular distances. WiMAX 802.16e also delivers non-line-of-sight, indoor and mobile capabilities.
“Being first to deploy 802.16e WiMAX in any market is exciting, but doing it in Silicon Valley is particularly challenging and a major market opportunity,” said Graham Barnes, former CEO of NextWeb (a fixed wireless broadband company acquired in 2005 by Covad) and current Nth Air advisory board member.
“We are excited that the promise of WiMAX technology has now reached the reality of the marketplace. The Nth Air vision to provide ubiquitous communications coverage is now being realized,” said Craig Niemeyer Nth Air’s President and CEO. “We at Nth Air chose to start our service and build our network in Silicon Valley by design. It is a well-known irony that here in Silicon Valley, the nexus for technology and innovation, businesses are often underserved with respect to their options for broadband connectivity. Nth Air is changing this by providing cost-effective, high-bandwidth connections for our customers.”
