Backhaul from cell sites to the carrier’s infrastructure sites have in the past been 50% microwave, 25% copper and 25% fiber. The copper of course is mostly multiple T1/E1 lines. With 3G data traffic increasing thanks to more video, email and Internet access via smartphones, it has become evident that the backhaul just cannot handle it. Carriers are beginning to find ways to upgrade their networks and become more IP compliant. In the near future, more microwave and fiber will replace that copper.
