Advanced Processor Boosts Mobile Media Performance

RMI Corp. showcased its Alchemy Au1300 processor family at the recent 2009 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Jsystec demonstrated the device in MID, portable media player, and navigation applications. The device supports integrated 3D acceleration, performance to 800 MHz, and video decode resolution up to 720p, including H.264 main profile. The Au1300 family also features further enhancements to power management that deliver full-chip power rates of less than 0.5 W at speed.

The Au1300 takes advantage of RMI’s innovative architecture to extend the performance and enrich the media experience beyond that of previous generation devices, according to the company. The processor incorporates an enhanced MAE2, providing Bit Stream Acceleration and entropy code that were formerly performed by the CPU core. This approach enables high-definition video decode at significantly higher bit rates and frees up CPU "headroom" for multitasking capabilities such as browsing, video chat, and other communication features.

The device also adds a high-performance Graphics Processing Engine from ARM. This dramatically improves 3D graphics acceleration. The ARM Mali family of Graphics Processing Units offers a broad range of acceleration solutions to suit many embedded graphics needs—including Web experiences, rich user interfaces, and 3D navigation—up to the most demanding requirements for high-definition screens.
