Fifth-Generation PAs Extend Talk Time

Avago Technologies has announced five new members of its CoolPAM power-amplifier (PA) family for UMTS band handsets and datacard applications. The devices in the ACPM-73x2 series are based on the company’s fifth-generation CoolPAM circuit technology, which provides one of the longest talk times among existing PAs with very low quiescent current at about 3 mA, according to Avago.

The ACPM-73x2 PAs are fully matched 10-pin surface-mount modules designed for UMTS bands 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8, and they meet a wide range of stringent UMTS linearity requirements and output power ranges. Also, the self-contained 4- by 4-mm form-factor package incorporates 50-Ω input and output matching networks. These PAs comply with talk-time requirements defined by most major global mobile carriers as well.

The CoolPAM circuit technology supports three power modes: bypass, mid-power, and high power. This stage bypass technology enhances power-added efficiency (PAE) at low and medium power ranges. An active bypass feature has been added to these PAs to enhance PAE further at low output ranges, which helps to extend talk time.

The PAs are manufactured on an advanced indium-gallium-phosphide (InGaP) hetero-junction bipolar transistor microwave monolithic IC technology for temperature stability and ruggedness. They also provide a thin 0.9-mm package, excellent linearity, three-mode power control with VBP and VMODE, and high efficiency at maximum output power. The lead-free packages comply with the European Union’s Restrictions on Hazardous Substances as well.

Pricing starts at $1.50 in volumes of 10,000 units.
