Android Platform Enables Mass Market Smart Phones
The BCM2157 dual-core baseband processor from Broadcom provides simultaneous HSDPA modem connectivity and Android-based applications processing. Its full suite of advanced functionality for 3G Android handsets includes mobile hotspots, multi-touch screens, media processing, and other capabilities designed to drive these features to a larger tier of users.
The platform’s 3G HSDPA modem supports 7.2-Mbits/s downstream connectivity and worldwide roaming. Also, the BCM2157 provides built-in support for HVGA displays, 5-Mpixel digital cameras, 3G dual SIM/dual standby, and other smart-phone capabilities. Its dual-core AMR processors offer dedicated modem support and 500-MHz application processing as well.
Broadcom’s complete connectivity suite features industry-leading Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and NFC solutions, including InConcert, which makes these technologies work better together, the company says. Further, its support for hotspot functionality enables handsets to share the 3G connection with up to eight simultaneous devices or users via Wi-Fi.
The BCM2153 is now sampling to early access customers, with the first commercial launches expected in the first quarter of 2011.
