Batteries Integrate Full Power-Management System

Calling it a breakthrough in battery technology, Cymbet Corp. has introduced the EnerChip CC thin-film batteries, which integrate a battery-management system in one surface-mount package. Two versions are available: the CBC3112 12-μAh device and the CBC3150 50-μAh model.

The EnerChip CC combines several power-system functions: thin-film battery, charge pump with integrated dc-dc converter, supply supervisor, low-ripple charger, configurable switchover to battery when input power fails, supply voltage status signals, and operation from 2.5 V to 5.5 V.

The devices come in either 7- by 7-mm or 9- by 9-mm dual flat no lead (DFN) surface-mount, reflow tolerant packages. The EnerChip CC features more than 5000 recharge cycles, low self-discharge, and stable output voltage. It does not require a socket or holder, which improves reliability.

Typical applications include standby supplies for microcontrollers, real-time clocks, and SRAMs; wireless sensors and RFID tags; power bridging during exchange of main batteries; and energy harvesting with transducers such as inductive coils and piezoelectric beams.

The device also is an ideal replacement for supercapacitors and coin cells in applications such as thermostats, handheld devices, medical diagnostic equipment, and embedded computing systems. A single EnerChip CC can manage multiple external EnerChips for high-capacity applications up to 500 μAh. It can power low-voltage systems at 2.5 and 3.3 V as well.
