Dual-Winding Inductors Target GPS And Other Handheld Devices

The HM78D series of surface-mount dual-winding inductors from BI Technologies suits GPS systems and other battery-operated handheld devices. Available in a rugged-cost-efficient package with excellent current-handling characteristics, according to the company, these inductors also can be used as a common-mode choke or as a dc-dc converter. They’re specified for use in single-ended primary inductor converter (SEPIC) applications as well as CD and DVD players and digital cameras.

The HM78D devices can be configured as two single inductors connected in series or parallel or as a 1:1 transformer. Their rated current inductance values range from 1.176 to 4036 µH when connected in series and 0.33 to 1000 µH when connected in parallel. Maximum dc resistance ranges from 0.0295 to 15.6 Ω and 0.0074 to 3.89 Ω, respectively. In series, rated current ranges from 0.135 to 3.6 A, with a saturation current from 0.16 to 9.18 A. In parallel, rated current ranges from 0.27 to 7.4 A, with a saturation current from 0.31 to 18.4 A.

Operating temperature ranges from –40°C to 125°C. Custom devices also are available. Typical pricing is approximately $0.47 each in quantities of 10,000.
