Chipsets Provide 4G Scalability
The Odyssey 9000 Long-Term Evolution (LTE) chipsets from Wavesat Inc. offer CAT-3 performance of 100 Mbits/s downlink and 50 Mbits/s uplink for mobile devices including USB dongles, data cards, mobile handsets, and mobile Internet devices (MIDs). According to Wavesat, this line of highly integrated systems-on-a-chip (SoCs) provides industry-beating performance and power consumption.
These chipsets incorporate a highly flexible and programmable unique multi-protocol architecture to easily adapt to LTE’s evolving requirements as well as support other 4G technologies such as WiMAX and Japan’s XGP. They also use a combination of highly efficient DSPs and hardware acceleration blocks that can scale to support CAT-4 (150-Mbit/s downlink) devices.
The first LTE baseband processor in the family, the OD9010, will come with an LTE protocol stack including MAC, RLC, PDCP, RRC, and NAS layers, in addition to a ready-to-manufacture reference design. It will sample in October. A follow-on dual-mode chip, the OD9050, will offer 3G and LTE. It will sample by mid-2010. Wavesat will exhibit at the 4G World Show in Chicago next week at booth 717.
