AlSiC metal matrix composites enable hermetic packaging

CPS Technologies’ aluminum silicon carbide (AlSiC) metal matrix composite packaging solution is suited for traditional hermetic packaging applications. AlSiC hermetic-packing solutions offer many benefits over traditional thermal management hermetic packaging materials, such as CuMo and CuW. AlSiC is significantly lighter than CuMo and CuW, making it the appropriate choice for weight-sensitive applications. AlSiC is also lower in cost than CuMo and CuW. AlSiC provides thermal management with a thermal expansion coefficient (TCE) that is similar to CuMo and CuW, and the thermal conductivity of AlSiC is also similar to that of these materials.

Additionally, AlSiC offers significant shape advantages over CuMo and CuW that require machining for all but simple shapes. The CPS casting fabrication process can produce AlSiC to net-shape, which produces both the composite material and final product shape in one process step. The net-shape casting capability enables the direct creation of functional design features, such as pockets for circulators, as well as cavities or pedestals for the die.
