Dual-Band TWTA Targets Military Satcom
The model 8923H dual-band traveling-wave-tube amplifier (TWTA) from L-3 Electron Technologies, Inc. delivers 300 W output power at 30 GHz and 175 W output power at 45 GHz for military satellite-communications (satcom) uplink applications. Designed for use over the 30.0-to-45.5-GHz frequency range, including the 33-to-36-GHz radar band, the TWTA incorporates focus electrode modulation to accommodate both continuous-wave (CW) and pulsed operation.
According to Alan Piring, the firm's Vice-President of Military and Telecom TWT Products, the small size and light weight of the design makes it ideal for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other mobile applications: "The model 8923H enables UAV, fly-away, Communications-On-The-Move and other weight/volume constrained platforms to interface with Wideband Global SATCOM and Advanced EHF satellites with a single amplifier rather than two." The new TWTA complements the company's existing model 8926HB 500-W Ka-band TWT (27.5 to 31 GHz) and model 8925HP 200-W Q-band TWT (43.5 to 45.5 GHz).
