WiMAX USB Modem Dongle Also Functions As A Mobile Phone

ECS EliteGroup has announced its U170 eMAX model, a WiMAX USB modem dongle that also functions as a cell phone. Like the S370 Personal Internet Communicator introduced to the market last month, the dongle integrates the Comsys Mobile ComMAX CM1125 single-chip multimode mobile WiMAX/GSM-EDGE baseband processor.

The U170 eMAX is billed as a new class of solution especially designed for the connected youth/student sector, providing a low-cost, compact device that functions both as a WiMAX USB modem dongle and a mobile phone. The device can be connected to any notebook or laptop computer to provide WiMAX functionality for Internet/data service or detached from the computer to function as a mobile phone for voice and SMS service. In addition to providing mobile WiMAX and GSM functionality, the ComMAX chip supports service continuity for converged mobile WiMAX/GSM-EDGE operators using standard MIP and IMS/VCC solutions.

The U170 eMax is expected to be commercially available early in May 2009. ECS will be supplying the device to several WiMAX operators in Taiwan as well as promoting it to WiMAX operators elsewhere in Asia, the U.S., and emerging markets. The companies will display the U170 eMAX at the 2009 GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at booth #2B73 (Hall B) and at booth #2G37.
