ESD Protection Devices Offer Low Capacitance, Low Profile

The latest two members of ON Semiconductor’s line of ESD protection devices feature extremely low capacitance and very low profiles. Both the NUP4016 and ESD11L5.0D can clamp an input ESD waveform of 15 kV to less than 8 V in nanseconds.

The NUP4016 protects four high-speed data lines in the tiny 1.0- by 1.0- by 0.4-mm SOT-953 package, making it the lowest-profile ESD device for high-speed communication interfaces on the market today, according to the company. A capacitance of 0.5 pF per I/O line makes it suitable for protecting interfaces such as USB 2.0 high-speed (480 Mbits/s) and HDMI (1.65 Gbits/s).

The ESD11L5.0D protects two high-speed data lines at 0.5 pF in the ultra-small 1.0- by 0.6- by 0.37-mm SOT-1123. The package offers a 50% smaller footprint and 20% lower height than comparable solutions offered in a SOT-723. The low capacitance and three-pin package provide the designer with a solution to protect the D+ and D– lines of a USB 2.0 port with one device. The ESD11L5.0D can also be connected cathode-to-cathode to protect a single bi-directional line at 0.25 pF, which is ideal for protecting high-frequency RF antenna lines.

The NUP4016 costs $0.40 each in 3000-unit quantities. The ESD11L5.0D costs $0.21 each in 8000-unit quantities.
