FPD-Link Serializer Cranks Resolution, Chops Power For Tablet Displays

While consuming a meager 90 mW, the Texas Instruments DS90C187 FPD-link serializer delivers the industry’s highest screen resolution and highest pixel clock rate of 185 MHz, according to the company. The dual-LVDS (low-voltage differential signaling) device supports WQXGA LCD panels at 30 Hz and QXGA panels at 60 Hz. Other features include operation from a single 1.8-V supply and an optional 18-bit color mode (6 bits per pixel) to further reduce power consumption and support lower-cost panels. A single-LVDS device, the DS90C185, is also available. It consumes 50 mW and supports 24-bit LCD screen resolutions up to SXGA+ (1400 by 1050) at 60 Hz. Prices for the DS90C187 in a 92-pin quad flat no-lead (QFN) and the DS90C185 in a 48-pin QFN  start at $3.95 and $2.50 each in lots of 1000, respectively. Datasheets for the DS90C187 and the DS90C185 are available at www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/ds90c187.pdf and www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/ds90c185.pdf.
