Claiming best-in-class phase noise and spurious performance figures, the LTC6946 375-MHz to 6-GHz frequency synthesizer from Linear Technology specifies a phase noise floor of –226 dBc/Hz and spurious levels of less than –100 dBc. The device is a complete frequency synthesizer integrating a low phase noise voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). Other features include an output charge pump delivering 11 mA to minimize loop compensation thermal noise low in-band 1/f noise and a programmable output divider for a wide operating frequency range. Target apps include wireless basestations, broadband wireless access, military and secure radio, and test and measurement. The LTC6946 comes in a 4- by 5-mm, 28-lead, plastic quad flat no-lead (QFN) package. Prices start at $5.75 each in 1000-piece quantities. A datasheet for the LTC6946 is available at http://cds.linear.com/docs/Datasheet/6946f.pdf.
