High-Performance RF Mixers Fit Wireless Infrastructure
The ADL5353 and ADL5354 high-performance RF passive mixers from Analog Devices target cellular basestation receivers, transmit observation receivers, and radio link downconverters. These applications require high linearity and low noise, making them a challenge as existing mixer solutions often require external components such as baluns that add complexity to design.
According to Analog Devices, its single-channel ADL5353 and dual-channel ADL5354 integrated passive mixers simplify designs, offer best-in-class performance, and complement the company’s mixer portfolio by extending the frequency coverage of ADI’s mixer products. They operate in the 2300- to 2900-MHz frequency range and offer the highest level of integration, the company says.
The mixers include an RF balun, a local-oscillator (LO) switch for dual-LO frequency applications, an LO driver, and an intermediate frequency (IF) amplifier. The balun integration enables the RF signal to be driven single-ended. The integrated IF amplifier provides the necessary gain, eliminating the need for an external gain stage. The 5-V (nominal) ADL5353 and ADL5354 can be operated from a 3.3-V supply voltage as well.
The ADL5353 and ADL5354 provide best-in-class third-order intercept point (IP3) and noise figure performance for excellent spurious free dynamic range (SFDR), Analog Devices says. They also offer excellent noise figure under blocker signal performance, the company says. High SFDR and low noise figure under blocker performance enable the mixers to be used in applications where they are operating in the presence of large interfering signals.
Both mixers are available now. The ADL5353 comes in a 20-lead lead-frame chip-scale package (LFCSP) and costs $6.98 each in 1000-unit quantities. The ADL5354 comes in a 36-lead LFCSP and costs $9.98 each in 1000-unit lots. Both are designed to work with the company’s integrated phase-locked loop/voltage-controlled oscillator (PLL/VCO) synthesizers such as the ADF4350, ADF4360-0, ADF4360-1, and ADF4360-2 as well as PLLs including the ADF4106 and ADF4153.
