Low-Current Voltage Regulator Turns On Fast, Exhibits Low Noise
The NCP508 low-current voltage regulator from ON Semiconductor offers an efficient and economical solution to generating a low-power voltage rail in applications such as touchscreens, keypads, smart phones, portable meters, printers, and remote controls. It can drive currents in excess of 50 mA and is housed in a compact SC-88A package with a footprint measuring 2.2 by 2.2 mm with an overall height of 1.10 mm.
The regulator exhibits a high ripple rejection of 70 dB typical (at 1 kHz) and noise performance of 40 µVrms (at 1.5 V). Current consumption is less than 1 µA. Low-voltage dropout is 140 mV at a 30-mA load, providing flexibility in designing auxiliary power rails. Its switch-on time of less than 20 µs is faster than most competing products, the company says, and lets designers maximize energy savings by powering down the device when the functionality it supports is not in use. The NCP508 can be used with low-cost ceramic capacitors, enhancing its appeal as an economical voltage regulator solution.
Maximum operating voltage is 7 V. The regulator can withstand high-voltage transients of up to 13 V, alleviating the need for external protection circuitry. Standard output voltage versions of 1.5, 1.8, 2.5, 2.8, and 3.3 V are offered with other voltage values available in 100-mV steps. Each device incorporates current-limit and overtemperature protection. The operating temperature range is –40°C to 85°C.

The NCP508 costs $0.20 each in quantities of 3000. A 1.5- by 1.5-mm dual flat no-lead (DFN) option is expected to be available later this year.
