Wideband low-noise synthesizers rival test equipment
Micro Lambda Wireless, Inc. has released its wideband low-noise frequency synthesizer models to production. These include MLSE-0220, covering 2.0 GHz to 20.0 GHz, and MLSE-0122 with a range of 1.0 GHz to 22.0 GHz. The new synthesizers feature low phase noise performance, while offering the user a multitude of user-friendly options. Key features include full 2-20 GHz and 1-22 GHz frequency coverage in 1-Hz steps, output power leveling to within ±1 dB and 0.1 dB resolution vs. frequency, additional second local oscillator frequency coverage in bands over 500 MHz to 4000 MHz in 100-kHz steps, external reference option from 5 MHz to 100 MHz, second RF output from 4 to 11 GHz, and an auxiliary input port to run an additional 2-20 GHz signal through the unit and switched to the main output RF connector. Power output across the full frequency range of 2-20 GHz is +20 dBm minimum, and across 1-22 GHz, it is +17 dBm minimum.
The units' ability to continuously cover the entire wideband range while providing outstanding phase noise performance makes these new synthesizers suitable for laboratory equipment sources, local oscillators in receivers, frequency converters and general applications. Typical phase noise performance of -104 dBc/Hz @ 10 kHz offset and -111 dBc/Hz@ 100 kHz offset on a 20 GHz carrier set this synthesizer family apart. Spurious performance is -60 dBc with tuning speed times of between 10-18 ms depending on step size. The design of this new synthesizer is based on the successful wideband MLSW-series synthesizer feeding a channelized doubler/divider module to obtain the final output spectrum. This yields a compact size given the wide frequency coverage provided. The units measure 7 inches x 5 inches x 2 inches, excluding connectors, and they weigh 3.5 lbs. Availablility is 90-120 days from receipt of order.
