M2M Modules Target CDMA And HSPA Applications

Article Tools

Motorola has announced two additions to its family of machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless modules—the C24 CDMA module, which is fully certified by Sprint, and the H24 HSPA module, which made its debut at last week’s International CTIA Wireless 2009 show in Las Vegas.

According to the company, the H24 was designed to meet the M2M industry’s growing need for high-speed 3.5G connectivity. The H24 series comprises the H24-Global, which provides tri-band HSPA connectivity (850/1900/2100 MHz), H24-Single (2100 MHz), and H24-NA (850/1700/1900 MHz). The modules offers high-speed HSUPA/HSDPA connectivity (5.76 Mbits/s up, 7.2 Mbits/s down) for true mobile broadband for next-generation M2M solutions like automotive infotainment systems, fixed-wireless terminals, telemetry, and advanced security systems featuring real-time video surveillance.

Also, the H24 features enhanced robustness and on-board GPS capabilities, making it the ideal solution for location-based applications, Motorola says. In addition, it includes receiver diversity for optimal performance under harsh network conditions as well as firmware over the air (FOTA) to ensure maximum reliability. The H24 and C24 both are built on the same compact form factor as the rest of the 24 family of wireless modules to provide flexibility with a single design solution. As the entire H24 series includes quad-band GSM/GPRS and EDGE connectivity, designers can add HSPA connectivity to their existing G24 GSM-based solution by integrating the H24.

The C24 features an internal TCP/IP stack for east data transfer, FOTA support, and SSL for secure connectivity. It also includes an on-board multimode GPS, including Autonomous GPS, A-GPS, and MS-based GPS, making it the ideal choice for location-based wireless applications, according to Motorola. With Sprint’s certification, its advanced features, and smaller size, the company says, the C24 will offer and additional choice for designers looking to embed connectivity to the Sprint network in their devices to deliver services (including GPS), fleet management, telematics, utilities (AMI), automation and control, remote monitoring, and other M2M applications.
