Miniature LED Enables Low-Profile Optical Touchscreens
The infrared CHIPLED SFH 4053 LEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors support small and medium-size touch displays in laptops, tablets, and smart phones. These miniature devices measure 0.5 by 1 mm and are 0.45 mm tall in an industry standard 0402 package, placing them among the smallest solutions on the market, according to the company (see the figure).
Measuring 0.5 by 1 by 0.45 mm, the infrared CHIPLED SFH 4053 LEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors support small and medium-size touch displays in laptops, tablets, and smart phones.
The CHIPLED SFH 4053’s infrared emitter (IRED) provides a 35-mW output from an operating current of 70 mA and can achieve as much as 260 mW from 700 mA in pulse mode. As a result, it produces enough light to make it east and cost-effective to expand camera-based touchscreen systems to larger screen diagonals, Osram says.
At 850 nm, the IRED’s light is barely discernable to the human eye, though receiver components exhibit very high sensitivity to this wavelength, suiting the CHIPLED to applications ranging from narrow-angle emitters for light grids to low-profile components for optimum injection into light guides. Additional LEDs are available in 0603 sizes with lens types from ±40° to ±10° and thin-film, nanostack, and other chip technologies.
