PowerPure Logic Core Extends Life of Portable LCD Devices

Article Tools

The Moxair PowerPure Hardware logic core reduces display power up to 70% and extends the battery life of portable devices by more than 40%, the company says.

The Content Adaptive Backlight Control Technology reduces the backlight power consumption of LCDs without sacrificing video or graphics quality. PowerPure products are used in software for embedded platforms such as ARM11 from ARM and OMAP from Texas instruments, and can be implemented across several platforms independent of the operating system.

PowerPure hardware interfaces with LCD controllers or media co-processor blocks in mobile systems. This independent hardware can be integrated using the standard interfaces of existing LCD controllers or media processor ICs.

Designers insert the PowerPure hardware IP core into the data flow prior to the LCD. The IP core takes RGB data from the line buffer and outputs it to the display. It also decides how to dynamically change the RGB content and use the appropriate backlight based on image content, tracking of the scene change, and history of the image sequence statistics. The Moxair IP can handle video resolution up to 1080p at 40 frames per second.
