SkyCross, Beceem Provide End-To-End WiMAX Modem Ref Design Solution
According to the companies, SkyCross and Beceem have collaborated on an end-to-end WiMAX modem reference design for USB dongles and handhelds that has achieved the highest system performance in field tests measuring maximum MIMO throughput of WiMAX modems.
The test utilized Beceem's 65-nm single-chip BCSM250 reference design in combination with a variety of different antennas such as PCB antennas, ceramic chips, and the SkyCross iMAT antenna. The testing confirmed that the antenna is a key component to the overall system throughput, and the iMAT antenna yielded the highest throughput on average.
According to SkyCross, iMAT is well suited for MIMO because it enables a single structure to behave like multiple high-performance antennas. "When it comes to the mobile WiMAX modem we cannot afford to leave valuable performance on the table," said Tim Towell, director of Network Technology at Clearwire. "The client device advancements enabled by the Beceem/SkyCross reference design helps to improve data rates and signal reception, which is crucial during the early mobile WiMAX adoption period."
This WiMAX modem will be on display at SkyCross’ booth at Mobile World Congress.
