Smaller Microwave Antenna Benefits Backhaul

Article Tools

Backhaul is the “invisible” side of cellular systems, but it’s growing in importance as operators expand their 3G networks to handle the ever-increasing voice and data deluge. Fortunately, the ValuLine Vision Antenna from Andrew offers reduced capital and operating cost benefits to wireless operators working to fix the backhaul bottleneck.

With a 1-m diameter, this microwave backhaul antenna provides performance similar to a standard 1.2-m antenna. Its new design enables radiation pattern performance and gain levels that also are similar to a 1.2-m antenna and comply with the highest regulatory standards. It will support customer radios and couplers as required as well.

The Andrew ValuLine Vision 1-m antenna

The Andrew ValuLine Vision 1-m antenna is available in 16 different versions that cover from 6 to 26.5 GHz. Gains run the range from 32 to 46.2 dBi with beamwidths of 0.8° to 3.3° depending on the frequency of operation. The feed is standard waveguide connections.

Additionally, the ValuLine Vision Antenna will close many 1.2-m links while providing higher gain in a smaller package. Its smaller size and improved physical design also will lead to less tower loading, lower tower leasing costs, easier installation, and a lower price.

The antenna’s innovative mount design provides unencumbered access to its rear, making radio equipment and waveguide cable installation easier. The mount allows for gradual adjustments, simplifying antenna alignment even under adverse conditions. Andrew’s design innovations include a lower-volume shipping package that also helps reduce freight and storage costs.

The ValuLine Vision antenna can withstand winds up to 250 kilometers per hour and boasts radiation pattern performance that exceeds European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) Class 3 performance. It will be available from the company’s four microwave manufacturing facilities worldwide. Single and dual polarized models are available.
