Tiny TCXOs Target GPS Applications
The NT2016SB series of surface-mount (SMT) temperature-compensated crystal oscillators (TCXOs) from Nihon Dempa Kogyo Co. (NDK) measures just 2.0 by 1.6 by 0.8 mm, making it one of the smallest and lightest GPS-grade TCXOs available, according to the company (see the figure). These devices also provide a ±0.5-ppm frequency stability from –30°C to 85°C. They are available in custom frequencies and standard popular frequencies (16.36767, 16.368, 16.369, 19.2, and 38.4 MHz) as well.
Furthermore, the NT2016SB devices operate from 1.8 to 2.8 V dc ±0.1 V while drawing just 1.5 mA max with a clipped sine output level of 0.8 V p-p minimum. Aging characteristics are ±1 ppm maximum per year. An enable/disable function allows the deactivation of the oscillation circuit when operation is unnecessary, reducing power consumption. And, the lead-free packaging meets the requirements for reflow profiling using lead-free solder while complying with the European Union’s Restrictions on Hazardous Substances.
Applications include wrist and pocket GPS devices, mobile phones and PDAs that incorporate GPS functions, in-car navigation, vehicle tracking, and emergency road support systems. Delivery is 12 weeks ARO. Packaged in tape and reel, the NT2016SB costs approximately $1.65 each in 10,000-unit lots. Qualified engineering samples may be ordered at no cost.
