Unified 3G Platform Supports TD-SCDMA/WCDMA

Marvell’s PXA988 and PXA986 SoCs enable OEMs to use the same PCB and ID designs, operating system, and application and multimedia software to address the WCDMA and TD-SCDMA markets.

Marvell’s PXA988 and PXA986 SoCs enable OEMs to use the same PCB and ID designs, operating system, and application and multimedia software to address the WCDMA and TD-SCDMA markets.

Claiming a mobile-market first, Marvell unveils a single, unified 3G platform using its next-generation PXA988 and PXA986 application and communications processor systems-on-a-chip (SoCs). Pin compatible, the devices enable OEMs to employ the same printed-circuit board (PCB) and ID designs, operating system, and application and multimedia software to address both WCDMA and TD-SCDMA markets, simplifying design cycles and reducing costs. Both PXA988 and PXA986 SoCs integrate 1.2-GHz dual-core processors with cellular modems to support current multimedia capabilities. Designed for the China 3G TD-SCDMA market, the PXA988 is the next generation of the PXA920 family of mobile processors. It features Cortex A9 1.2-GHz processors, full 1080p encode/decode capability, an image signal processor paired with a graphics processing unit that achieves 192 million triangles per second, a 533-MHz LPDDR2 memory architecture, and a TD-HSPA+ R8 modem supporting dual-carrier aggregation and Dual SIM Dual Talk. Targeting WCDMA markets, the PXA986 single-chip, dual-core mobile processor features an HSPA+ R7 modem supporting 21.1-Mbit/s download data-rates and 5.76-Mbit/s uploads. Engineering samples of both SoCs are available now. For more info, visit www.marvell.com/communication-processors.
