Wi-Fi Front End Features Two Matched Power Amps
Based on an innovative architecture that is the first to integrate two fully matched power amplifiers on one die, the SE2566U is the world’s smallest front-end solution for Wi-Fi applications, according to SiGe Semiconductor. The highly integrated device optimizes size and power consumption in support of computing and embedded systems.
Besides the two 2.4-GHz amplifiers, the IC includes harmonic filters, input and output matching circuitry, and power detectors for each transmit stream in a 3- by 3-mm package. The integrated filters ensure that the harmonic contribution of the power amplifier is reduced to –50 dBm/MHz.
Also, an integrated load-sensitive transmit power detector offers 20 dB of dynamic range. In addition, the device includes a reference voltage generator, which allows 1.8-V CMOS digital enable control directly from the baseband and eliminates the need for analog bias controls, while drawing less than 1 μA.
The high level of integration cuts the bill of materials by 80% compared to using two unmatched power amplifiers in MIMO applications, resulting in a savings of about 25 cents. The SE2566U is available now at a price of $0.60 in volumes of 10,000.
