ADAPTIX powers Willcom in test of OFDMA next-generation mobile services

Article Tools

ADAPTIX has provided equipment and technical support services to Japan-based service provider Willcom for use in a trial testing the effectiveness of OFDMA as the basis for next-generation personal handyphone system (PHS) services. Willcom is using ADAPTIX OFDMA-powered base stations and mobile terminals in advanced testing of multimedia applications -- including simultaneous usage of voice-over IP (VoIP), streaming IP video and high-speed Internet access -- in a wide variety of mobile conditions.

Using existing PHS technology, based on time-division multiple access (TDMA) technology, Willcom provides mobile service nationwide in Japan, serving more than four million PHS subscribers. A next-generation OFDMA-based PHS service could have the potential of providing a cost-effective and high-performance upgrade path for the nearly 100 million PHS subscribers worldwide, the majority of whom reside in Japan and China.

Willcom initiated its trial with ADAPTIX in November 2005 with an extensive series of fixed and mobile application testing. Due to the highly successful early results of the test, Willcom has been awarded a one-year trial license from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in support of additional testing and demonstration of next-generation mobile services.
