Hybrid Camera Uses 10-Mpixel Sensor For Full HD Video

Ambarella Inc. has incorporated the 10-Mpixel MT9J001 sensor from Aptina in its recently introduced A5 hybrid camera platform. The A5 combines a high-performance image pipeline with an H.264 compression engine. Integrating the Aptina sensor into the Ambarella platform enables a hybrid camera that fits into a shirt pocket yet still shoots high-quality digital still images and full high-definition video separately or in combination.

Using Aptina’s rapidly advancing CMOS technology, the MT9J001 image sensor includes a unique 1.67-μm pixel format and the HiSPi serial data interface. The result is 1080p60 video performance, which is beyond the capabilities of CCD technology, according to the company.

The Ambarella A5 platform with the Aptina 10-Mpixel sensor reference kit is available now for evaluation and development. The MT9J001 is currently sampling with mass production in limited quantities scheduled to start during the first quarter of 2009.
