New England firm to build microwave assemblies for multimission helicopter

Herley Industries Inc. has announced that its Herley New England division in Woburn, Mass., has received contracts totaling approximately $2 million from Lockheed Martin Systems Integration-Owego to manufacture integrated microwave assemblies for the avionics systems on board the MH-60R multimission helicopter (MMH).

The MH-60R is the U.S. Navy's new primary maritime-dominance helicopter, replacing the SH-60B and SH-60F aircraft. It was designed primarily for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. Secondary missions include search and rescue, naval surface fire support and medical evacuation.
Lockheed Martin, the prime air weapons systems integrator for the MH-60R, recently announced a multiyear contract under which it will integrate advanced electronic systems into 139 multimission helicopters through 2013.

This program is part of the U.S. Navy's plan to convert all of its SH-60s to multimission H-60Rs ("R" for "remanufactured"). The new version features advanced radar, new missile capabilities, low-frequency dipping sonar, an integrated self-defense suite, and a number of other improvements that include a new cabin, a service life extension for the tail, new avionics, and a new "glass" common cockpit based on display screens rather than dials. This will enable pilots to switch from one aircraft type to another with greater ease and will reduce the logistic support infrastructure, resulting in lower cost of ownership.

Based in Lancaster, Pa, Herley Industries designs and manufactures microwave technology for the defense, aerospace and medical industries.
