Northrop Grumman has received a contract valued at $256 million from the U.S. Marine Corps to develop its ground/air task oriented radar (G/ATOR). This new radar system will consolidate the missions of five current Marine Corps radar systems into a single, multirole radar system.

The contract scope during the first program phase includes system development, fabrication and test of the Increment I system. It will also include low-rate initial production of two G/ATOR systems, followed by full-rate production of 15 more systems. The Marine Corps has stated as its objective a total of 63 G/ATOR systems. The new radar system is intended to fully support the Marine Corps's expeditionary warfare requirements and will use Northrop's active electronically scanned array radar technology.

Northrop's Baltimore-based electronic systems sector will serve as the prime contractor for the program. Other members of the team include Techrizon, Lawton, Okla.; Sensis Corp. Syracuse, N.Y.; CEA Technologies Inc. Canberra, Australia; and Caterpillar Logistics, Morton, Il.
