Supplier ramps up production of its Bluetooth-compliant RS-232 adapter
SMART Modular Technologies Inc. has taken its Bluetooth 1.1 compliant RS-232 adapter to volume production for worldwide distribution.
Targeting the industrial and medical markets, SMART's Bluetooth RS-232 adapter replaces traditional serial cables used with products such as laptop computers, industrial data collection systems, and medical monitoring equipment and now allows wireless connection to Bluetooth-enabled devices.
Complete with an onboard antenna, an embedded Bluetooth communications stack (with Bluetooth SPP) and an embedded configuration utility, the SMART RS-232 adapter features auto-sensing of power either from its external power adapter or from the host device (via pin 9). Power consumption is specified at less than 150 mA maximum during continuous operation, with 100 mA to 120 mA typical. During sleep mode, power consumption drops to below 1 mA. Offering maximum data transfer rates up to 200 kbps, the RS-232 adapter supports Class 2 operation (+2 dBm typical transmit power with a maximum range of 30 m).
"Enthusiastic market demand has caused SMART to ramp up to high-volume production of our RS-232 adapter," said Robert Ragusano, vice president and general manager of SMART's Communication Products Division.
"Domestic and international volume shipments are an excellent indicator of global acceptance and upswing of Bluetooth technology across a variety of consumer and industrial products."
