Boingo and Maxis expand worldwide Wi-Fi network in Southeast Asia
Boingo Wireless has entered the Malaysian market through a roaming agreement with Maxis. Maxis, a member of the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), has more than 7 million mobile phone subscribers and operates a comprehensive Wi-Fi network, with 118 hotspots in prime locations frequented by business travelers. Key locations include the Business Center (Kuala Lumpur Airport), the Genting International Convention Center and the Mines Convention Center, in addition to numerous retail locations, hotels, restaurants, cafes and coffeehouses throughout Kuala Lumpur.
The addition of the Maxis network brings the total number of Southeast Asian hotspots in the Boingo Roaming System to almost 1800. It follows similar roaming agreements in Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand, and reinforces Boingo as a pioneer and strategic player in the Asian Wi-Fi market.
"With ASEAN nations gaining global economic momentum, Malaysia plays an increasingly critical role in the regional economy and is becoming a key business destination," said Allen Pan, Boingo director, Asia. "The nature of the Maxis network and its WBA affiliation means our users are assured of convenient high-quality connections while in Malaysia."
The program provides partners with access to this network, customized client software, and a full suite of back-office billing, roaming, mediation and clearinghouse services to allow them to offer their own Wi-Fi service quickly and cost effectively. To date, the company has announced Platform Services partnerships with BT Infonet, Earthlink, Fiberlink, Nextel Communications, MCI and Telecom Italia.
