Tantalum capacitors address embedded systems applications
AVX Corporation has developed a broad range of tantalum capacitors that are well suited for embedded control systems. AVX's TPS and TPM series provide low ESR and improve the filtering capability and power rating within a small dimension and reduced height.
New mirror-design, multi-anode tantalum capacitors in a TPM D-case with a 2.9 mm height provide almost identical ESR levels compared with traditional E-case multi-anode construction and with lower component profile. The symmetrical design of two horizontal anodes enables the reduction of inductance down to 1 nH, which is 50% lower than with standard single-anode construction. The lower ESL shifts the resonance frequency up to 500 kHz ,which enables more effective usage in today's favorite switching frequency range of 250 kHz to 500 kHz. Due to the higher power dissipation of the mirror design D-case, the capacitor can handle higher ripple current, compared with a single-anode design.
The horizontal layout of the anodes has the additional benefit of downsizing to the 2 mm profile of a TPM Y-case, making these multi-anode capacitors better suited for height-limited applications.
All AVX tantalum capacitors meet the requirement of lead-free assembly, contain no hazardous substances and are RoHS friendly. Engineering samples of the Y-case TPM capacitors are be available.
