Research and Markets announced the addition of ‘Wi-Fi Chipset Fever: 140 Million and Growing’ to its offering. The wireless LAN (WLAN) chipset market is expected to reach just over 140 million annual chipset unit shipments in 2005, representing a phenomenal annual growth rate of a little over 50%. Chipset revenues are expected to reach almost $1 billion, representing a 27% annual revenue growth rate. Furthermore, the Wi-Fi chipset market is expected to grow to 430 million annual chipset shipments in 2009.
In 2005, the growth was primarily driven by mobile PCs, home/SOHO wireless routers, residential gateways and external clients. WLAN chipsets embedded in mobile PCs reached 45 million in 2005. Approximately 40 million chipsets for home/SOHO wireless routers and residential gateway (RG) devices shipped in 2005. Additionally, chipsets for external clients continued to ship out in considerable quantities, with approximately 25 million shipped in 2005. The remainder of Wi-Fi chipset shipments will come from the emerging portable CE device segment, namely handheld games, as well as the emerging stationary CE device segment, primarily from gaming consoles and printers.
