Device Servers Add Functionality, Wi-Fi and Wired LAN Access to Installed Serial Devices
Connect One has released the iLAN-100, a 10/100BaseT device server, and iWiFi, an 802.11b Wireless LAN device server. The two products are designed to enable flexible Internet Protocol (IP)-based communication in serial devices that run M2M (machine-to-machine) applications.
Unlike most other device servers that only use TCP or UDP sockets for communication, iLAN-100 and iWiFi enable customers to use upper layer Internet protocols, such as SMTP, FTP and HTTP, for remote management and control. In addition, unlike many device servers, iLAN-100 and iWiFi include remotely updateable Web sites to configure the onboard iChip Internet Controller engine, and to configure and manage the host device. When IP-enabled by iLAN-100 and iWiFi, devices can act as servers and be managed easily via Connect One's Device Connectivity Server, even when the device is located behind a firewall or NAT (Network Address Translator).
iChip supports up to 10 simultaneous TCP and UDP sockets for multitasking Internet sessions and two TCP listening sockets for acting as a server. iChip also includes upper layer protocols like SMTP, POP3 and MIME for sending and receiving textual and binary emails; an HTTP server and client; FTP and Telnet clients. Each product includes a DB-9 connector to attach to the host serial device's RS-232 port. iLAN-100 includes an RJ-45 connector to attach to the 10/100BaseT Ethernet LAN, while iWiFi includes an 802.11b compact flash adapter.
Both iLAN-100 and iWiFi are available now. iLAN-100 is priced at $115 in lots of 100 to 999 units. iWiFi costs $270 in lots of 100 to 999 units.
