Atmel’s maXTouch mXT224 touch controller is driving Kyocera’s Echo, which the companies call the industry’s first smart phone with dual touchscreens. Echo provides two 3.5-in., 480-by-800 displays, that operate individually or unfold into a single, 4.7-in., 960-by-800 display like a tablet. The screens interface mechanically via Kyocera’s patent-pending sliding liquid-metal pivot hinge. Additionally, the smart phone exploits a 1-GHz processor running on Android 2.2, integrates a 5-Mpixel camera with 720p video capture, and runs apps such as e-mail and YouTube.
