Dublin’s Wi-Fi model impresses other municipal officials
The City of Dublin, OH, is one of the world’s first deployments of a wireless mesh network designed to increase public safety, improve city services, boost economic development, and enhance the quality of life for its citizens.
More than 150 city officials representing municipalities from Ohio and neighboring states recently gathered in Dublin to learn how to successfully implement a wireless mesh network with low risk and high return on investment. DHB Networks, also of Dublin, OH, sponsored the event to educate other municipal officials on their public-private partnership model deployed in Dublin.
This model provides the benefits of Wi-Fi and its value-added community services while reducing the costs and complexities of infrastructure ownership.
The DHB Wi-Fi solution, known as AIRWIRZ Mesh, is designed to provide wireless broadband service to dramatically enhance the transmission of voice, data and video communications. Other benefits to municipalities include improved public services such as emergency response, police data transfer, and heightened security for city events.
“Our new Wi-Fi network being installed by DHB Networks will advance the technology-based economy that is instrumental to the future economic development of the City of Dublin and all of Central Ohio,” said Dublin City manager Jane Brautigam. “By enhancing public safety services and enabling a more mobile workforce, Wi-Fi is in tune with our goals of establishing Dublin as the premier location in which to live and work.”
Dean Zanone, customer solution manager for Cisco Systems, also addressed the group of city officials. “When the UPS truck driver has better communications systems than public safety officials, it’s time to rethink the situation. Cities can use wi-fi to deliver the right information in the right format to the right person at the right time.”
The DHB solution assembles affordable and leading-edge technology tools to create a reliable and secure platform that migrates voice, data and video communications to Internet protocol (IP). As a result, a city’s “first responders” (i.e., police, fire, emergency medical) can access critical information instantly in their vehicles. The first responders are able to focus more time and energy on serving the community, and less time waiting for information and handling desk work.
DHB continues to work with the City of Dublin and various technology partners to identify and implement a broader range of solutions to enhance economic development and quality of life for Dublin citizens.
