iPhone 5 Teardown Reveals $199 BOM
The iPhone 5’s overall bill of materials (BOM) has increased to $199 since the iPhone 4S, which had a BOM of $188, according to IHS iSuppli. Its BOM has increased mainly because of its larger display and its wireless subsystems. The display with separate touch screen combined costs $44 because the larger display measures 0.5 inches diagonally larger than the 4S. Also, the iPhone 5 has high-speed 4F LTE technology, which is a main reason for the increase in price of the wireless section, at $34, which is $10 more than the previous model. Another major upgrade with the iPhone 5 is the A6 processor, which is only $2.50 more than its predecessor. However, the iPhone 5 saw a $9.20 decrease in the costs of its 16 bytes of NAND flash.
