Joint Effort Creates Embedded PCTV Solution For Ultra-Mobile PCs

Article Tools

MaxLinear Inc. has partnered with Hauppauge Digital to provide an Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standards-based PCTV minicard designed for ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs). The minicard is based on MaxLinear’s MxL5007T, a multi-standard digital CMOS silicon tuner supporting several digital terrestrial TV standards such as ATSC, DVB-T, DVB-H, and DTMB. The card has been integrated into UMPCs that are shipping.

The tiny MxL5007T operates at 350 mW. Promising a longer battery life, the device offers a 50% power savings over other tuners and ensures good reception, says MaxLinear.

Kishore Seendripu, MaxLinear’s CEO, says “Netbooks and UMPCs are emerging as a key mobile entertainment platform because they are both compact and have decent-sized screens, and we see them having a great impact on the PCTV business and on mobile TV as well. Hauppauge is one of MaxLinear’s longest standing customers and we are excited to have this partnership opportunity to deliver such a unique solution.”

“With UMPCs driving much of the growth in the PC industry, we are pleased to expand our cooperation with MaxLinear to our latest ATSC/QAM minicard solution,” says Ken Plotkin, president and CEO of Hauppauge. “The ultra-low power consumption of the MxL5007T, coupled with its high performance, provides a unique combination of benefits especially valuable for our target market.”
