DVB-T Receiver Gives Multimedia Handset Mobile TV Capabilities
Styled like a PDA, the KB770 multimedia handset from LG takes advantage of DiBcom’s DVB-T receiver to play free-to-air digital broadcasts. With support for WCDMA 2100 and for GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, and HSPDA data, the 3G/3G+ multiband handset can showcase programming from most European countries on its 3-in., 400- by 240-pixel touchscreen.
Yet while free content is bound to be popular, companies need to develop a revenue stream for long-term deployment of mobile TV services, the companies warn. “We encourage the industry to consider a mixed business model involving a combination of free content, with an optional pay-TV system for premium channels and services,” said Yannick Levy, CEO of DiBcom. “This model can be applied to countries with one single TV standard or those where complimentary standards such as DVB-T and DVB-H coexist.”
