Energy-efficient, surface-mount white LED is low-power alternative to conventional lighting
Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. has expanded its family of white LEDs with a new device that provides a typical flux of 30 lumens (lm) with a driving current of only 250 mA. The new TL12W01-D surface-mount LED is well suited for space-limited applications that require high-brightness LCDs. With dimensions of just 10.5 mm x 5.0 mm x 2.1 mm, it is also a good candidate for backlighting.
This LED is able to deliver typical performance of 35 lm/W as a result of a low thermal resistance package that provides improved heat release characteristics. (A typical tungsten light bulb delivers only 17.5 lm/W.) The forward voltage for the new device is rated at 3.4 V (typical) at a forward current of 250 mA so that power consumption is 0.85 W. A wide operating temperature range of -40 degrees C to 100 degrees C enables use of these LEDs in a broad range of applications.
Designed for assembly on automated lead-free production lines, the new surface-mount device is compatible with reflow soldering processes at temperatures up to 260 degrees C.
Samples of Toshiba's TL12W01-D are available, priced at $2.00 each.
