Sequans introduced its newest Mobile WiMAX chip, the SQN1310, at the CTIA Wireless 2011 trade show. The chip leverages the architecture and software of Sequans SQN1200 series technology while providing higher levels of integration that Sequans believes will enable a smaller design footprint and reduced system cost.

The SQN1310 delivers baseband and dual-band RF in a single 65-nm die, and the 9- by 9-mm package includes memory. In addition to the low power consumption enabled by its core 65-nm architecture, the SQN1310 employs power reduction techniques to further reduce power consumption, especially in idle mode, extending the battery life of mobile devices.

The SQN1310 comes with a comprehensive software package – Sequans’ 4G-EZ software suite – that includes a turnkey solution for both Android and Microsoft platforms, and seamless 3G/4G handover. Sequans’ 4G-EZ software is based on seven years of Sequans’ field experience and is running in all major WiMAX deployments.

The SQN1310 Mobile WiMAX system-on-chip is sampling now and will be generally available in Q2. This WiMAX chip is used in Sprint’s HTC EVO View tablet and HTC EVO 3D smartphone, which were also unveiled at the CTIA show.  The HTC EVO 3D smartphone will allow users to experience 3D on their phones without glasses.

Built with the Gingerbread 2.3 version of Android, the HTC EVO 3D features the United States’ first QHD 3D 4.3-inch display and a 1.2-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor. The HTC EVO 3D also features dual 5-Mpixel cameras, which can be used to capture both 3D images and videos, opening up new frontiers for user-generated content, social networking, and streaming video (see figure 1).

The HTC EVO View 4G features dual cameras, a main 5-Mpixel auto-focus camera with HD-capable video camcorder and a forward-facing 1.3-Mpixel camera. Other key features include 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot capability, 32GB internal memory, 1GB RAM, a microSD slot that supports up to 32GB memory card, Bluetooth 3.0, integrated GPS, and a 4000 mAh lithium-ion battery.

Sprint and HTC’s first 3G/4G Android tablet together, the HTC EVO View 4G, features a tablet design with a 7-inch 1024 by 600 touchscreen display with pinch-to-zoom, a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm  Snapdragon processor and the latest version of HTC Sense (see figure 2). As a combination e-reader, media player, and portable computing device, the HTC EVO View 4G offers HD-quality video and the ability to browse the Web on Flash-enabled sites.

The HTC EVO View 4G comes with HTC Scribe Technology, which introduces a digital pen to the tablet experience. When combined with Evernote, a notes application and service, the user will have the ability to capture and make notes on Web pages, ebooks, and PDF documents.

Both devices will be available for Sprint customers this summer. Pricing will be shared closer to launch.
