NFC-Enabled Contactless Smart Card Reader Invades Mobile Device Market

HID Global and Sony have jointly developed a contactless smart card reader platform that embeds secure access control capabilities and Near Field Communications (NFC) functionality into laptops and other mobile devices. It relies on a secure element to store cryptographic keys and supports common contactless technologies for applications ranging from physical access control and identity assurance at the desktop to transit-fare, point-of-sale collection and loyalty programs. The two companies have also released a comprehensive reference design for the embedded NFC module and will also provide developer support.
