Low phase noise frequency synthesizers cover 1.5 GHz to 12.8 GHz

Teledyne Microwave has introduced its 9700 series of single-loop frequency synthesizers that exhibit low phase-noise performance of -120 dBc/Hz (to 3.2 GHz), -114 dBc/Hz (to 6.4 GHz) and -108 dBc/Hz (to 12.8 GHz) at 100 kHz offset. These synthesizers feature channel spacing of 1 kHz, output power of +12 dBm, typical; and an operating temperature range of -32 °C to +75 °C. Applications include SATCOM converters, test and measurement equipment, block upconverters, point-to-point microwave radios and military communications.

The synthesizer is constructed on two surface-mount boards. Custom frequency designs are accommodated by employing Teledyne's unique modular construction, thereby controlling costs for small production runs. The 9700 series units measure 8.8 inches x 3.6 inches and 0.8 inches high. They include SMA input and output connectors in addition to a 10-pin connection for computer control. The devices have been designed to meet ETSI 300019-1-4 shock, vibration and microphonic compliance. Evaluation units are available with software, mounting board and cables to run from a desktop computer. Custom designs are also available in the frequency range of 1.5 GHz to 12.8 GHz with a bandwidth of 25% or less.
