Nordic Network Hits 84 Mbits/s
3 Scandinavia has announced that its network speeds will quadruple from 21 Mbits/s to 84 Mbits/s, making it the world’s fastest 3G network, the company says. Ericsson will complement the upgrade by supplying and supporting a 900-MHz 3G network, the first in Sweden, to improve coverage. Rollout nationwide in Denmark and in four major cities in Sweden will start in the first quarter of 2010.
The three-year contract between Ericsson and 3 includes the HSPA Evolution capacity upgrade of its existing 3G network, via 42 Mbits/s, to 84 Mbits/s plus a new WCDMA/HSPA radio access network on the 900-MHz frequency band. Ericsson also will provide IP-based (Internet protocol) optical and microwave backhaul and support services.
“We were the first to launch turbo 3G in the Nordic region, and now we are first signing up for the world’s fastest 3G,” said Peder Ramel, CEO of 3 Scandinavia. “Our Scandinavian customers are sophisticated users with high demands in terms of mobile broadband services. Ericsson is evolving our network so we can meet these demands and give our customers true connectivity wherever they are, from city office to country cottage.”
