OPNET Launches WiMAX Model Development Consortium

OPNET Technologies Inc., a provider of management software for networks and applications, has announced the formation of a model development consortium focused on the new WiMAX (802.16) communications standard. WiMAX is a wireless network technology that is expected to compete with DSL, cable and T1 for delivering broadband Internet access to businesses and homes. The consortium is led by OPNET and includes representatives from several leading technology companies, with Motorola participating as a founding member.

"The purpose of our WiMAX model development consortium is to establish a framework that is shared by leading industry and government organizations," said Taylor Salman, director of business development for OPNET. "The result will be a powerful simulation modeling suite for WiMAX network planning and design. We are extremely pleased with Motorola's commitment to the process."

"Leveraging OPNET's framework gives us the opportunity to design and test Motorola's differentiated components for our WiMAX equipment. This will help Motorola bring our MOTOwi4 WiMAX mobile device product to market faster by reducing the development cycle time through system modeling," said Jaime Borras, corporate vice president, Motorola iDEN Networks and Mobile Devices.
